Making your own glass cleaner is not only better for the environment — it can save you a lot of money, too!

Here are four different recipes suggested to us by site visitors. Try one or more of them out to see what works best for you.

Glass cleaner #1

1/4 cup lemon juice OR vinegar
2-3 drops liquid dish soap
2 cups of water

Glass cleaner #2

1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
1/2 cup vinegar
4 cups water
Teaspoon lemon juice

Glass cleaner #3

1/2 cup sudsy ammonia
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
1 tsp dishwashing soap (not dishwasher detergent)
6 cups water

Glass cleaner #4

1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
1 tbsp lemon juice
3 cups water

Tips for making homemade cleaning products:

  • Label the spray bottles with your homemade glass cleaner so you don’t forget what it is — or what’s in it.
  • Be sure to never mix ammonia and bleach… or products containing those cleansers.
  • Rubbing alcohol works not just to clean, but to make the solution dry more quickly.
  • For super-dirty windows, you can try adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda or Borax to the solution. These both offer a little bit of an abrasive, plus are natural deodorizers.
